Last Few Weeks At Fun n Sun

The last few weeks at Fun N Sun were a whirl of activity as we tried to say goodbye to our friends and finish all the things we had to do. Many of the activities revolved around food so we will definitely have to move into our respective gyms when we return to Ottawa.

We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in the Rec Hall with green beer, a pot luck dinner and lots of music. Fortunately Gillian was feeling better so she and Gary were able to attend.  The next day we went to the Winter Texan and parishioner’s pot luck at Father Isaac’s church where there was a large spread of food. The students served all of us bringing plate after plate of dessert to our tables.

Blair & Sharon had a lovely happy hour / goodbye celebration on Monday the 18th – one of the warmest days in March. Paul parked his bike in the direct sun which we never thought would be a problem. When we heard a loud popping noise, we thought that someone’s beer bottle had exploded. However, it was Paul’s bike tire exploding so he had to walk the bike home and go searching for a new tire the next day.  He couldn’t believe that he was once again changing tires – his favourite pastime this winter.

We went to the annual Farewell Winter Texans Fiesta in Nuevo Progresso on March 21 with Dave & Myrna. There were the usual assortment of vendors lining the main street along with free tamales and beer being served as early as 9:30 am. We bought a few things and then decided to head back to Weslaco for a great lunch at Fat Daddy’s BBQ.

On Friday March 22, we hosted a farewell happy hour at our place and were pleased that we were able to see our friends before we left the park. Again it was a hot sunny day without too much wind – were we ever lucky!!  Later that evening, we headed over to our last Texas Country Dance of the season.

On Palm Sunday, we walked in Father Isaac’s annual procession from one church to the other. This year we were even accompanied by a donkey which the children took turns trying to ride. It was a cool, cloudy day and it even rained while we were in church.  We said goodbye to Janice and John M. as they headed north to spend Easter with family before going home to Wisconsin.

We went to Tommye and Otis’s karaoke party in the Rec Hall on Monday the 25th – again a good opportunity to say goodbye to more of our friends. The K street girls did a number of songs and we even managed to get the K street gang to do one song.

Our last dinner in the RGV was at the Golden Palms Retirement Centre in Harlingen – a dinner for two that we and Jim & Pat K. had won earlier in the winter. We were served in the dining room with white table cloths and napkins – actually quite a fancy setting. This was yet another example of how we can live quite inexpensively in the RGV.

At 7:00 am Wednesday March 27, we left Fun N Sun and headed to Austin to spend Easter Weekend.  After such a busy and fun winter, we were really sad to leave and look forward to heading back early in November.

March 2013

March is always a busy month at Fun N Sun with the annual ladies’ luncheon and style show, and luau as well as end of the year pot luck suppers, happy hours, country dances and musical events.

Willie Nash McCall’s musical tribute to Ray Charles on March 2 was very enjoyable since the music was very different from the usual families singing bluegrass.  The Country Legends concert on March 14 was the second of Encore Corporation’s musical events for this season.  They were such a success that they are planning three more “tributes” for next season.

The ladies’ luncheon was on March 6th with a theme of “God Bless America”. The simple but elegant “picnic lunch” didn’t exactly get rave reviews. Fortunately the fashions from the local stores were lovely and quite affordable. It is too bad that it came so late in the season when Jane’s closet and drawers are already full.

Later that afternoon, Ron and Sue Holmes organized a pot luck meal at 3:00 pm in our Rec Hall for the local parish priest, Father Isaac. Father loves Ron’s motorcycle so a ride on it is always part of this event.

Amy flew down for March break and arrived at the McAllen airport around 11:15 pm on March 10. She had wonderful weather while she was here and got to experience where we live during the winter.

We had a great time at the luau on March 11.  Our decorated table – “Surf & Swine” won second prize in the most comical category.  It was definitely a group effort with Jenn even emailing us clip art for our sign. The band, the Cruisers, were excellent so we danced for most of the evening.
